Via Calgary Herald: 'It's wild': Grey Cup Festival will be party time at Stampede Park

"A jam-packed week of football fun awaits Canadians from coast to coast who plan to touch down in Calgary for this year’s Grey Cup."

On Thursday, the Calgary Stampeders announced details of the annual Grey Cup Festival that will take place Nov. 20 to 24 leading up to the game, which includes more than 40 events and attractions. All festivities will take place at Stampede Park, including a street festival in a 13,000-square-metre outdoor space. It’ll feature a 20-metre-tall inflatable screen, known as the Stratosphere Projection Dome, on which 360-degree projections will be displayed inside and out, similar to an IMAX theatre.

The Scotiabank Saddledome will host the CFL awards show as well as the Grey Cup Gala on Thursday and Friday, respectively, while Saturday will feature the first ever Grey Cup Rodeo and a “significant” concert at the Stampede Corral.

“We’ve really taken this space at Stampede Park, which is a great, big footprint, and allowed us to program it differently than maybe you could’ve done in other locations. It’s inspired us to bring new things,” said Mike Franco, chairman of the 2019 Grey Cup Festival. “I know what this city is capable of when we host parties and I don’t think anybody can come close to what we do.”

While this year’s organizing team has worked closely with the committee that delivered last year’s festival in Edmonton, where the Stampeders defeated the Ottawa Redblacks to win the Grey Cup, Franco said they hope to one-up their provincial rivals. “We saw them grabbing the Grey Cup and taking it to another level,” he said. “The Battle of Alberta. We have to deliver a better job.”

Grey Cup tickets go on sale to the general public on May 7. Prices start at $119, while the most expensive seats are going for $419.

The provincial government is kicking in $1.5 million to fund the festival, which infused about $80 million into the Edmonton economy in 2018. Tourism Calgary CEO Cindy Ady said she thinks Calgary can match that economic impact, and expects 30,000 guests to descend upon the city throughout the week leading up to the Nov. 24 game. “What I love about it is the whole country comes together and the whole country celebrates,” she said.

“It’s wild.” Mayor Naheed Nenshi echoed that thought.

“When we have a Grey Cup here in Calgary, we get to show everybody our energy,” Cornish said. “I truly think that Calgary is probably the best host in the country.”
